This antimicrobial gene belongs to the subfamily of small cytokine CC genes. Cytokines are a family of secreted proteins involved in immunoregulatory and inflammatory processes. The CC cytokines are proteins characterized by two adjacent cysteines. The cytokine encoded by this gene displays chemotactic activity for dendritic cells, thymocytes, and activated macrophages but is inactive on peripheral blood lymphocytes and neutrophils. The product of this gene binds to chemokine receptor CCR9. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.

The CC cytokines are proteins characterized by two adjacent cysteines. The cytokine encoded by this gene displays chemotactic activity for normal peripheral blood eosinophils and basophils. The product of this gene is one of three related chemokines that specifically activate chemokine receptor CCR3. This chemokine may contribute to the eosinophil accumulation in atopic diseases.
CCL27/CTACK, also known as CTACK, is a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family. Members of this family are proteins characterized by two adjacent cysteines. CCL27/CTACK is chemotactic for skin-associated memory T lymphocytes. CCL27/CTACK may also play a role in mediating homing of lymphocytes to cutaneous sites. CCL27/CTACK plays a pivotal role in establishing the inflammatory infiltrate characteristic for common inflammatory skin diseases. Throμgh binding to the chemokine receptor 1 (CCR1), CCL27/CTACK mediates inflammation by promoting lymphocyte migration into the skin.
